Union J put a brave face on their disappointment after they crashed out of The X Factor in tonight's semi-final.

The foursome – who had been favourites to go out – missed out on their chance to sing at this weekend's grand final after they came bottom of the public vote.

Soloists Christopher Maloney, 34, James Arthur, 24, and Jahmene Douglas, 21, all survived the final hurdle and will now sing in front of 10,000 people in Manchester.

Union J's Josh Cuthbert said: 'I'm so happy about how we've done – we've got so much to thank X Factor for.'

Fellow band member Jaymi Hensley said it had been a 'dream' to appear on the talent show.

'I can't describe how amazing it's been,' he added. Mentor Louis Walsh was disappointed but added: 'They're going to have an amazing future – they're the next big boy band!'

Finalist James Arthur was surprised he survived the public vote.

'I had a really bad feeling I wasn't going through, I'm over the moon,' he admitted.

Christopher Maloney paid tribute to his supporters and bookies' favourite Jahmene simply said: 'Next week, bring it on.'

Earlier, Tulisa Contostavlos had performed her single Sight Of You in front of the X Factor audience and her fellow judges.

The 24-year-old admitted finding the experience 'terrifying'.

US star Pink also made her X Factor debut as guest performer while the four semi-final acts all sang with rock legend Rod Stewart.

However, the X Factor's ratings slump continued as 8million viewers tuned in for Saturday's semi-final – down by 2.6million on last year.
