EXCLUSIVE: X Factor judge Gary Barlow has insisted he doesn't take his OBE, fame and status for granted and really cares what people think of him.

He claimed his time in the pop wilderness meant his current popularity was 'everything'.

'I'm not one of those people that says "I don't care what anyone thinks about me I'm just going to do it" I actually do care, I really do,' the 41-year-old told Metro.

'It has been a big year,' added Barlow, who suffered heartache when his baby girl Poppy was stillborn.

But focusing on his solo tour, which saw his tickets out-sell great rival and Take That friend Robbie Williams, he said his new success was 'incredible'.

'It's been unbelievable, it really has,' he said.

'I still pinch myself that I'm able to make records and sell records and I can't believe that. And it just seems to have gone up another gear this year but I love it.

'I love what I do and I work hard at what I do and I try and use my position in the right way.'

Proof of his popularity came when he claimed a gong at the prestigious Music Industry Trust Awards.

But he insisted the most important thing was to enjoy himself. 'Do you know what, more than anything else it's having a bit of fun this is for me,' he said.

'This is what I've done since I was 11, you know, go on stage, play songs and people hopefully respond well – that's what I've done and I haven't toured in about 18 months. I could not wait any longer.

'I just thought I'm going to put a little solo tour in, take ten musicians on the road and have some fun really and that's what we're doing.

'It's so much fun for me to sit and write my set list now, you know.

'I've got so many songs which everybody knows, it's just a lovely night, it really is.

'I love it when I go out there. It's a great reception, it's just great. Life is great for sure.'
