Like Russell Brand, the crooner was left enamoured by Geri Halliwell when they enjoyed their own Spicy moment backstage at the Olympics closing ceremony.

The 21-year-old reflected on his Geri time while looking back on his meteoric year to remember as we chatted before his iTunes Festival gig last night.

'We were hanging out with them,' the Lego House singer said of his Spice-schmoozing sesh. 'Geri Halliwell is a very cool person,' he swooned.

But he reckons fans wanting the Spice Girls to do a reunion tour are in for a disappointment. 'I think that comeback for them was a one-off thing,' he told me.

Once he waved goodbye to Geri and company, the singer told how he warmed up to entertain the world at the closing ceremony by playing four hours of ping pong before performing his cover of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

The star isn't doing too badly at roping in the famous beauties after US superstar Taylor Swift got in touch to do a 'cool' duet. He said: 'It's bizarre. She's a fan and got in touch and I really respect her and her music.

'We wrote a couple of songs and recorded one as a duet for her record.'

As for his own new material, the songwriter says fans face a 'year and a half' wait for a fresh offering.

'I have done around 20 songs for the next album and it won't be released until I finish touring next September.  It's the same kind of song-writing style, so I guess it would be similar stuff.'

After bagging  two Brits, a No.1 album and playing for the Queen at her diamond jubilee concert  in the space of 12 months, Ed says making his dad's dreams come true was the biggest highlight.

'Getting to introduce my dad to Paul McCartney in Buckingham Palace was quite a moment,' he said.

'My dad's been very helpful with my career so far and is a massive fan of The Beatles so getting him to chat with Paul McCartney was a big moment for me. That will be the highlight.'
