Gary Barlow has revealed he came incredibly close to quitting his role as a judge on The X Factor, admitting the huge pressure of appearing on the show almost became too much.

The Take That star said he felt he could not cope during last year's bid to mentor one of his young hopefuls to victory.

He cited the massive pressure involved with being part of the X Factor and appearing in such a high-profile role as the reasons for his doubts.

'I did come close to quitting. It was hard. When you become part of this machine, you're on something that's moving and you've got to try and stay on board,' Gary told the Sun.

The judge went on to reveal that his unhappiest moments often came on Sunday nights when he would feel extremely nervous if one of his acts found themselves in the bottom two.

'You'd watch this spaceship swirling around knowing that millions of people are watching and it was out of your hands,' Gary added.

The good news is that the Take That singer seems more content with this year's series and suggested he is 'excited' to have been given the chance to succeed with the often unfancied over-28s category.
