A long time before winning Olympic gold or being chosen to compete on Strictly Come Dancing, Victoria Pendleton used to self harm.

She made the revelation on BBC Breakfast, admitting that she hit low points during the early stages of her career in cycling.

Pendleton went on to say that Dr Steve Peters, the British cycling psychiatrist, helped her to get through it and become the success she is today.

She said: 'I went through a short period where I was very low, I felt unworthy.  People were investing so much time into me, and into something where I didn't think I'd ever be.'

Pendleton went on to talk about her romance with fellow cyclist Scott Gardner, who she is engaged to, and her fears about performing on Strictly.

She said: 'It's pretty scary, we're all pretending to dance [so far] because we didn't have time to know what we're doing [on the launch show].

'It's very challenging, physically not so much but my feet don't bend the way they're supposed to after years of cycling.'

Denise Van Outen, Fern Britton and Lisa Riley will all be competing with Pendleton on the show this year, as well as fellow Olympian Louis Smith.
