X Factor judges cull boot camp hopefuls after JLS pep talk

X Factor judges have sent a third of the show's contestants home from bootcamp without even giving them a chance to sing.

Everyone who tunes in for tonight's show will watch a third of 211 hopefuls getting axed before they even have the opportunity to perform in front of Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh.

It is unlikely that many of the contestants saw it coming, after enjoying a welcome party where they received a pep talk from JLS.

The boy band, who found fame on the talent show, gave the pop star wannabes some encouraging advice.

Band member Oritse Williams told them: 'This is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime, so you have to make sure you take it with both hands, you know who wants it the most, and it's who wants it the most that will get it.'

Marvin Humes added: 'I'm looking at an X Factor winner right here.'

Unfortunately, the positive welcome was followed by emotional scenes as the X Factor hopefuls gathered to find out who would be going through and who would be leaving the competition.

Judge Louis Walsh defended the decision to send so many home without giving them the chance to perform.

'I know we are doing the right thing. I know it's tough, but that's show business,' he said.

Fellow judge Gary Barlow said that the decision would give the other two-thirds of people a good chance of learning something going forward.
