Melissa Armstrong, the niece of former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, has spoken of her devastation after ITV bosses opted not to air footage of her audition on the show.
Cheryl may still have friends in high places on The X Factor, but this couldn't help her niece Melissa, whose audition was panned by the judges before being edited out of the final cut.
The Girls Aloud star was a judge on the show for three years and returned this year to help Gary Barlow make crucial decisions at boot camp - a stage of the competition Melissa never made it to.
The 21-year-old auditioned for X Factor judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger earlier this year and has since found out that not only did she not advance to the next round, but her audition won't be aired on the series.
'I have no idea what's going but it doesn't look like I am going to appear,' Melissa told The Sun, claiming that producers had led her to believe that she would feature on the show.
It's believed that while Louis and Nicole thought enough of Melissa's audition to send her through to the next round, Gary and Tulisa were unimpressed with her rendition of Auntie Cheryl's Promise This.
'Everybody is angry that Melissa's audition has been scrapped,' a family friend said. 'We can't believe it. She gave a really good performance and believed she would be featured in the audition shows.
'But after it was announced Cheryl was making her surprise comeback, it all went quiet. I wonder why that is?
'If anything, Melissa is a better singer than Cheryl. It's so unfair.'
