Exclusive: Former N-Dubz star Fazer claims he is a real rags-to-riches story after music saved him from a 'drug-infested' past.
Launching his solo career, the N-Dubz star said he was brought up the hard way in north London.
'My mum used to clean toilets and my dad used to put up market stalls on the weekend. We grew up on next to nothing,' the 25-year-old told me.
'My mum started giving me a couple of quid here and there when I turned 16 so I kind of had to find other ways to make money. I'm not going to candy coat it and say that I was an angel because, coming where I come from in Camden, it's not a sunny walk. It's very drug-infested.
'There's a lot of drug abuse going on. Growing up around that you get influenced into things to try and earn money.' He admitted finding work was not easy. 'I tried to get jobs before and I'd turn up in a brand new tracksuit and I'd think I'd look great and there were people in there in suits and stuff and I was feeling out of place,' he said. 'The guy would be like, "We're not hiring no more" and I'd be like, "But there's still people waiting outside".
'So I'd be like, "What can I do to get me a job?" My mum's not giving me money any more. I need to start doing other stuff. I was influenced by street life from a young age but thank God that people supported my music.'
The singer, real name Richard Rawson, insisted he would make it as a one-man band, playing the keys, drums and writing and producing all his own music – including his sexed-up debut solo single Killer, out now.
'I'm not just a rapper,' he said. 'Records that I am doing are a game changer.
'They are completely left field. There's nothing out there like that.'
