Katherine Jenkins has contacted the police to pass on several violent threats she has received, after the Welsh singer took to Twitter to deny claims she had an affair with David Beckham.
Crazed 'fans' of celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham reacted with fury when Jenkins first denied any relationship with the former England captain.
However, after first receiving criticism for her actions in going public on the social networking site, the abuse of Ms Jenkins, 32, now appears to have got out of hand.
One user has threatened to 'cut' Ms Jenkins if the rumours of the affair are true, while others made derogatory remarks about her.
Another user even threatened: 'I'll kill that s*** Katherine Jenkins.'
A spokesman for the Neath-born mezzo-soprano said: 'Due to the serious nature of the threats, the tweets have been reported to the police.'
Earlier yesterday, in an apparent attempt to put the whole episode behind her, she wrote to her followers, 'Back to work #HappySaturday' alongside a picture of her in a recording studio.
The entire episode is a result of Katherine's public denial of any affair between her and Becks.
The singer tweeted a series of messages to her fans to say she'd only met Beckham a couple of times and had never arranged any sort of secret tryst or rendezvous.
'Dear Twitter friends, I've read some horrible rumours on here & want u 2 know I absolutely deny I've had an affair with David Beckham,' she wrote.
'The rumours are very hurtful, untrue & my lawyers tell me actionable.
'I've only met David twice: once at the Military Awards in 2010 & on a night out in the West End in Feb 2012.
'We were out in a group of friends & it was just a normal fun evening out. Just so we are clear I have never been on my own with him and never arranged to meet up.'
Following her messages, thousands of baffled members of the public said they had never heard the rumours before.
A spokesman for David Beckham later commented: 'Unfortunately, we have to deal with this type of nonsense on Twitter.
'One minute David is dead... then a more scurrilous rumour. There is not one jot of truth to any of it.'
Police are said to be investigating the subsequent threats to Ms Jenkins.
