Radio DJ Lucy Horobin has quit Twitter after she received a barrage of abuse from One Direction fans who were riled by her rumoured affair with Harry Styles.

Rumours emerged at the weekend that 18-year-old Harry had an affair with the married DJ, who is 14 years his senior, last year.

Today the 32-year-old deleted her Twitter account after she fell victim to a tirade of abuse from One Directioners - the collective name given to fans of the boyband - who condemned her over the alleged tryst.

It was claimed while Harry was seeing Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, who was also 14 years his senior, he was enjoying a secret fling with Horobin.

The pair met at Manchester-based radio station Key 103, where Lucy works, last August and according to a former colleague, they had instant chemistry.

The source told the Daily Mail: 'Lucy and Harry hit it off from the moment the boys walked into the studio - it was electric and they were flirting like crazy.'

But on Monday, Lucy attempted to quash the rumours surrounding her personal life as she took to Twitter to silence the critics.

She wrote: 'To clarify, I haven't said ANYTHING to any press, nor do I wish to. Thank you to those of you who have said kind words today. Xxx.'

But this only served to spur on the bitter 1D fans who weren't happy at the news.

They took to the social networking site in their droves, verbally abusing the DJ, calling her 'sick' and even a 'wh**e'.

One wrote: 'Haha you stupid f***ing wh**e. god you must have some issues to f*** a 17 year old boy hahahahaha.'

Lucy isn't the first female to fall victim to jealous One Directioners though, and she undoubtedly won't be the last.

Flack received death threats from 1D followers when their tryst became public knowledge.

When Harry was then linked to US model Emma Ostilly, she too became a victim of online abuse and deleted her Twitter account.

Harry has remained tight-lipped following the rumours linking him to Lucy.
