Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are to divorce after less than six years of marriage.
Rumours about the state of their relationship had been circulating for some time and they had not been seen together in public since February.
Katie Holmes' lawyer revealed she had split from Tom Cruise (Allstar) Holmes' lawyer Jonathan Wolfe has now confirmed that the Hollywood stars are to split.
'This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,' he told People magazine.
'Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.'
The reasons behind the break-up are unclear and Cruise is yet to comment on the story.
Holmes and Cruise started dating in 2005 and he proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in June of the same year.
They tied the knot at an Italian castle in November 2006, seven months after Holmes had given birth to their daughter Suri.
The relationship was Holmes' first marriage, but she was Cruise's third wife.
He was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers for three years and his Days of Thunder co-star Nicole Kidman for a decade.
