X Factor rejects District 3 have denied reports they became bitter rivals with Union J during the show, saying the two bands are actually good friends.

Speaking on The Xtra Factor last night after they had lost to Union J in a battle of the boybands sing-off, they wished the quartet luck and said they were looking forward to working with them once again on The X Factor tour early next year.

'There's been this whole thing in the press about us being rivals,' said band member Greg West, 'but to be honest we've made the best friendship and I wish them all the luck in the world'.

And speaking of the band's departure from the show, he added, 'We saw it coming a little, but we've had the most amazing time and although it's the end of us in the competition it's the start for us as a band.'

Bandmate Dan Ferrari-Lane added: 'Union J are amazingly talented guys and they are friends of ours so they deserve it.'

Meanwhile the other contestants also revealed their disappointment in waving goodbye to the trio.

Union J's Josh Cuthbert said on the show: 'When they told us we were through we were like "yes" but then two seconds later you realise that District 3 are heartbroken at the same time and you go and comfort them.'

James Arthur added: 'I had a really bad feeling I was going to go... I had a proper feeling something bad was going to go down tonight. Thankfully it wasn't me but when we lost our mates District 3 I was really disappointed.'

And Louis Walsh, who has been mentoring both acts, admitted that he did not expect to see them battling it out for survival on last night's show.

'I thought both groups were big enough and good enough to have different fan bases,' he admitted. 'I'm gutted to be quite honest with you and I honestly didn't expect to have two acts in the bottom two.'

He also addressed rumours that One Direction were jealous of Union J, saying: 'That's news to me. I think every boyband watches every other boyband coming up.

'They came from the show, One Direction, and they've had an amazing career so they're probably watching the new kids Union J.  I think there's room for both bands in the music business.'
