American actor Jared Leto has predicted he will slip into a 'meditative state' after revealing his alarming weight loss for his new role as a transvestite Aids patient in The Dallas Buyers Club.
The 30 Seconds To Mars singer's extreme method acting has seen him catch up with fellow famished co-star Matthew McConaughey in the weight loss stakes.
The 40-year-old said 'weird' stuff had started happening to his body as he goes hungry for his art.
He explained: 'I didn't get involved in the project until three and a half weeks ago.
'Your body goes through weird stages (when fasting). Sometimes it's hard to hold on to water. But for me, it's not about the most weight I can lose, it's more to represent the character.
'I'm focused on what it means to be a transsexual woman,' he said.
'Historically, people have done it for pursuit of self, to achieve a meditative state, so I'm hoping for that, and not the other things. It's not necessarily a bad thing.'
McConaughey, 42, who plays real life Aids victim Ron Woodruff, has shed 18kg (40lb) so far.
Their characters meet in hospital in the movie, which tells the tale of Woodruff's fight to survive by smuggling in unapproved medicine before his death in 1992.
