Gary Barlow has cast doubt on his X Factor future after admitting he may not be back in the judge's chair.

He returned to solo stardom again with a gig at the Royal Albert Hall and insisted it was 'too early to say' if he would return to the ITV show for a third stint.

And the decision might be out of his hands amid rumours that boss Simon Cowell could replace him as part of a shake-up to halt dwindling audience figures.

Barlow, 41, said the X Factor had taken up too much of his time in a year which also saw him organise the Queen's jubilee party and perform with Take That at the Olympics.

'At this point it feels like we've been doing it nearly all year,' he said. 'I mean it's such a long show, even entertaining the idea, it's just not the right time,' he said.

He said he would know more after the festive period. 'We sit down in January and have a talk about what we got right, what we got wrong and where the future is but I have loved it, I've enjoyed it more than last year definitely,' he said.

Even if he is not judging talent next year, he will still have some connection to the show after admitting he would be up for working with his former nemesis Rylan Clark.

Clark, who was booted out of the show earlier this week, has put his name in the hat to be Britain's representative in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.

On their warring and eventual truce, Barlow said: 'At the beginning I meant it but I did warm to him by the end though he was a lovely bloke.'

His solo return got off to a shaky start this week when the gig was put back after the venue ran out of water and had to be delayed for health and safety reasons.
