X Factor bosses have warned show staff to stop laying into Christopher Maloney - because they're worried he's getting the sympathy vote.
It comes after music mogul Simon Cowell reportedly admitted fears that Chris could win the show and turn it into a 'joke'.
He even tried to get fans to follow his lead and vote for James Arthur when he told followers on his Twitter page who he's rooting for.
The backlash against Liverpudlian singer Maloney really came into force when he made it through to the quarter-finals two Saturdays ago as show favourites Ella Henderson and James Arthur fell into the bottom two.
Ella ended up being given the boot after the shock sing-off and Maloney soon found himself the victim of malicious death threats for still being in the competition.
Last weekend was no different as Rylan Clark was waved out of the competition after a sing-off with Union J while Maloney sailed through to the semi-finals.
Now bosses behind-the-scenes of the ITV show are pleading with judges and X Factor staff to stop giving Chris a hard time in the hope that it will stop him getting the 'sympathy vote'.
A source told The Sun: 'The backlash is working for Christopher. The more people say nasty things about him, the more votes he gets.
'The feeling now is the less said about him the better.'
Yesterday, Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack, 32, also suggested the only reason Chris' place on the show is safe is because the public feel sorry for him.
Speaking on This Morning, she said: 'There are a lot of boos and I feel really sorry for him when I hear those boos. I do. I think anyone getting booed is horrible.
'He's there on his own, he's in the competition like everybody else, and people are voting for him. He's not doing anything different to anyone else - he's not asking for extra votes, he's not getting any extra airtime, but I think what's happening is people are feeling sorry for him.
'And that's perhaps might be why people are voting, but people are voting.'
