Mutual friend Reese Witherspoon, who starred with R-Patz in Water For Elephants, introduced the pair when DiCaprio said he was concerned about the young heartthrob, and now Leo is flying Rob out to Puerto Rico for some partying.
A source told US website Showbiz Spy: 'Leo has been one of Rob's role models for years, and Rob was totally taken by surprise when Leo called him.
'He invited Rob along on a getaway he's planning when he's in Puerto Rico for the wrap party on the movie he's producing, Runner, Runner.'
The insider added that the A-listers will party in style, with Leo hoping to book a mansion somewhere secret on the coast, so there will be no media intrusion into the event.
It seems that Leo is keen to use the trip to help Rob get over his former beau and Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, who hit the headlines after photos emerged of her cheating with married Snow White and the Hunstman director Rupert Sanders.
The source continued: 'Leo figured it would be great for him to hang out with a bunch of laid-back guys.
'Leo joked they could compare baseball cap collections - and told Rob before he knew it, he'd be dating a model, just like him!'
