Russell Brand: I'm still at risk of falling back into drink and drugs trap

Russell Brand admits he's still at risk of being sucked back into his battle with boozing and drugs.

The comedian told Metro he was born an addict and then grew up to be 'a bog standard regular drug addict'.

Asked if his battle with his demons still rages, Brand explained: 'Yes it is actually…not in the way you think.'

After a rough old year that has included a divorce from Katy Perry, the British star said: 'It's not like "I'd do anything for a bit of gear!" or "I wish I could have a bottle of Vodka". It's more "I just feel miserable, what the f***ing hell is the point?" Or I'll get some [feelings] of despair or sadness or self-importance or grandiosity. And if I don't have a way of dealing with that I will eventually drink or use drugs.'

Russ concedes he didn't stand a chance as he was hooked from day one.

'I think I was born like it. When I used to eat chocolate as a kid I used to eat it excessively, when I watched porn as a teenager I think I watched it excessively. When I got into girls I got into them excessively.  Money, clothes, fame, everything, I get into it excessively. So when I took drugs I obviously got into that excessively as well.'

His disease spiralled as temptations took hold.

'I was terrible. I'm just a bog standard regular drug addict and alcoholic but people who were around me at that time said I was not easy to be around. I was getting arrested all the time, stealing all the time, didn't take responsibility for anything. Fights, mayhem, chaos, all of the time…didn't have anywhere to live so I slept in people's houses. No morality, it's a disease that makes whoever has it a total pain in the arse and people who are around them suffer more from it.'

For now Russell is winning the fight through his day-by-day abstinence based approach.

'99 per cent of people if they truly committed to abstinence based recovery and they had the support structure around them they would benefit from it. I didn't want to go into rehab, I said f*** off. I got sacked off XFM, I got sacked of MTV and all the jobs I had and eventually I had nowhere else to go,' he said.

Slowly and surely, Russ has turned his world around.

He said: 'The way that it is dealt with is one day at a time because that's the way you live your life. You don't have to live your life five years ago or five years in the future so it's best to acknowledge that "today I have this issue".'

'It's knowing that drink and drugs aren't going to make me any better. They're not going to help. I just wake up the next day with the same problem, and some,' said the star.

'It's just dealing with the situation practically. Today I cannot take or use drugs but tomorrow I will have a look at it again. Of course I know tomorrow I won't be using them.'

Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, airs Thursday at 9pm on BBC3.
