Victoria's picture perfect relationship with footballer David Beckham apparently made Katie realise that her marriage to Cruise was far from ideal.
Now magazine reports that she plucked up the courage to take the first step towards a split after being inspired by Mrs Beckham's strength.
A source told the mag: 'Victoria's been a real tower of strength. Katie's seen how a normal marriage should function by being around Victoria and David Beckham, so she knew that something was wrong with her relationship with Tom.'
They went on: 'She and Victoria have been talking a lot. Posh has been trying not to take sides, but she has let Katie know she'll be there for her whatever she chooses to do.'

Holmes took everyone by surprise when she filed for divorce a fortnight ago, ending their five-year romance.
The couple have since released their first joint statement, tasking for privacy: 'We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests.
'We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents'.
There is no word yet on whether the 33-year-old Batman Begins star will get any of Cruise's £180million fortune or whether she has been awarded sole custody of Suri.
