The singer called in the Ministry of Defence after the man, whose profile said he was in the Army, told her: 'just seen you bought s*** I mean adopted a child from Africa.'

Lily, who tweets under her married name @lilyrosecooper, reported the comment to the MoD after asking her followers: 'How do you report someone on here. That guy I retweeted should be banned.'

An Army spokesman said: 'Racism of any kind is completely unacceptable and the Army has a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of harassment and discrimination.

'We are aware of the alleged offensive comments and are investigating the matter. It would be inappropriate to comment further while this is ongoing.'

Lily, 27, is no stranger to Twitter rows after she used the site to snub chat show host Piers Morgan last year.

She has also clashed with Cheryl Cole, who on Tuesday revealed she has been a victim of online bullying for more than a year.

The former X Factor judge told Grazia magazine about the personal attacks she has suffered on Twitter and Facebook.

'It's evil and very public,' the 29-year-old said. 'People judge my appearance and hair, and say that I look fat.'

She also told the magazine she can  relate to the teenagers helped by her charity, The Cheryl Cole Foundation. 'I get what these kids have gone through because I had a tough upbringing and understand what it feels like to be bullied like some of them,' she said.

'I really want to help these young people because I know how it feels to come out on the other side and be someone who achieves.'

The Cheryl Cole Foundation works with The Prince's Trust to help young people in the north-east. Geordie girl Chezza also told how she had to endure an 'etiquette lesson' before meeting the Prince of Wales at Clarence House but forgot to say 'prince'.

She said: 'I just called him Charles, which was embarrassing.

'Someone behind me started coughing to correct me but he (Charles) couldn't stop laughing.'
