Sir Elton John says he's lucky not to have suffered the same fate as Freddie Mercury after revealing how he escaped the clutches of Aids.
He told the International Aids Conference he hit 'rock bottom' in the 1980s in a world of cocaine abuse and unprotected sex.
In an emotional speech to delegates in Washington, he made references to the late Queen legend and the US actor Rock Hudson, saying: 'I should be dead – six foot under in a wooden box.
'I should have contracted HIV in the 1980s and died in the 1990s, just like Freddie Mercury, just like Rock Hudson.'
Elton and his partner David Furnish host a White Tie and Tiara Ball every year in order to raise money for the Elton John Aids foundation.
The bash this year was attended by the likes of David Walliams, Kelly Brook, Naomi Watts, Florence Welsh, Dame Shirley Bassey and Matthew Morrison.
Now in its 14th year, the event has raised £45million since its launch in 1998.
