Robert Pattinson had been making plans to propose to Kristen Stewart in the days before he found out she had been cheating on him.
The Twilight actor intended to pop the question to his co-star and long-term girlfriend at the end of the summer.
However, his plans were blown out of the water when she admitted she had enjoyed a fling with film director Rupert Sanders.
R-Pattz, 26, is devastated by the news and has moved out of the £5 million Los Angeles mansion he bought for him and Stewart to share as husband and wife.
A source told the Sunday Mirror: 'Robert hoped to marry Kristen and was making preparations to spring a proposal before she admitted cheating.
He had bought the house in Los Angeles to be their home and saw them staying there for a long time.'
While Sanders appears to have persuaded his wife, British model Liberty Ross, to give their marriage another chance, the future of Pattinson and Stewart looks much less secure.
He is said to be seething at the news of her infidelity and the pair have only exchanged angry text messages in recent days.
They will be forced to come together next month to promote the final instalment of the Twilight movies, Breaking Dawn: Part 2, as they are contractually obliged to do so.
