Michelle Heaton has revealed she is afraid of leaving her baby daughter without a mother after finding out she has an 80 per cent chance of contracting cancer.

The former Liberty X singer received a lot of flack when she jetted off on a romantic Bahamas getaway with her hubby Hugh Hanley, choosing to leave their seven-month-old daughter Faith behind.

The pair were inundated with abuse from Twitter trolls, prompting Michelle to set the record straight over the reasoning behind their decision to leave the tiny tot at home.

'I want people to know the truth,' Michelle told OK!

'I have the BRCA2 cancer gene, which means I have an 80 per cent chance of getting ovarian cancer or breast cancer - and that's on top of everybody else's one-in-three chance,' she explained.

'Of course it was hard leaving Faith,' Hugh added, 'But we needed time as a couple to get our heads around it.'

The mum-of-one went on to explain that she is now faced with the prospect of surgery.

'I've got to have an operation and we've got some decisions to make - whether I should have a double mastectomy and if I should have my ovaries removed to reduce the risks,' she revealed.

'We're going to have some counselling sessions before we make our minds up. I've got my first mammogram soon.'

Michelle, 33, found out about her predicament after her father discovered he was a carrier of the BRCA2 cancer gene.

She was tested at Great Ormond Street Hospital and says she felt 'numb' when she was given the awful results.

'I still feel numb,' she added.

'I'm afraid of leaving my child motherless. That's my biggest fear. I might pass away and I won't see my baby grow up. She might not have a mum around.'

The news comes after Heaton was hospitalised at the weekend with her long-term heart problems.

Speaking about her health scares on Twitter, she said this morning: 'The shoot with @OK_Magazine this weeks reveals something I've been living with for a couple a months.

'Along with the events of the last few days it's been a very tough couple of months. I am blessed to have such a wonderful family and amazing friends in this difficult time.

'They say things come in three's.. Let's hope not. Two potential life altering issues is enough thank u very much...this week I have tests and investigations into the cancer gene so i can make informative decisions on operations & family going forward.'
