The boyband star, who has previously been linked to the American songstress, tweeted her a happy 20th birthday. 'Happy birthday honey! Have a lovely day! See ya soon,' wrote the 18-year-old Irish heartthrob.
The term 'Nemi' soon started trending on the micro-blogging site as fans began to speculate the pair are more than friends.
A suspected relationship between the two has been played down in the past with actress Lovato, 20, previously admitting she'd rather focus on her career than a boyfriend.

But it's a different story for Niall, who has been keen to see how things played out between the pair after some serious Skyping.
He told US radio host Ryan Seacrest last month: 'We've spoken, yeah.
'She's a cool girl so I got in contact with her. She's really nice.'
'I don't know what's going to happen,' he added.
