Tom Cruise enjoyed a quiet curry with friends and family in St Albans, but the movie star, who is worth £160 million, let his friend pick up the bill.
The Mission Impossible star and his entourage racked up a bill of more than £220 at the Veer Dhara restaurant, but Tom was left red-faced when it turned out the establishment did not take American Express.
Luckily, one of his friends stepped in to pay the bill, and left staff an £80 tip too.
However, restaurant manager Darshit Hora said that staff were so stunned by Cruise's appearance that had the group had no money, the meal would have been on the house.
Mr Hora said that Cruise's bodyguards entered the restaurant first, informed staff that 'someone special' was coming in, and to ensure that the meal was low-key.
He told the Standard: 'They said someone special was coming but did not say who it was. When he came in it was a big shock but we just wanted to be professional.
'They said he wanted a nice, quiet meal with his family, so we sat them near the kitchen.'
The Mission Impossible star sat with his back to the other clientele at the restaurant, and seemed 'happy and relaxed,' he added.
