Gary Barlow appeared to dodge questions about the level of support he is giving to his remaining X Factor finalist Christopher Maloney - as the man himself admitted making the semi-final was a 'dream come true'.
Speaking on the XTra Factor after Maloney had made it through to the final four the Take That singer - who has previously tipped James Arthur to win the series - faced a difficult moment when a caller asked him if he would support Maloney if he were not mentoring him.
As Tulisa answered 'no,' and Louis Walsh promptly agreed, Barlow hit back with: 'We take our categories and we stand by the people, that is what we do, that is our job.'
But instead of pledging support for Maloney he added: 'I don't need to answer that question because the public have already voted for him, so the public have already answered that question.'
Barlow had previously defended the 34-year-old on Saturday night's show, saying he was feeling 'uncomfortable' at the amount of criticism levelled his way.
And afterwards he appealed to viewers to leave him alone, saying: 'He's a guy from Liverpool who's just singing on a talent competition, and it's like he's killed somebody. Give him a break.'
However Maloney shrugged off all the recent criticism after making it through to next week, saying that making the last four was 'an amazing feeling'.
'I'm so happy,' the Liverpudlian singer said, 'I can't believe I got to the semi-final of The X Factor, it's just my dream come true.'
He also paid tribute to his fans for keeping him in the competition up until now, as well as praising mentor Barlow, calling him 'fantastic' and 'a great friend'.
'He's just so hands on and he helps me all the time if I ever need him,' the singer said. 'And it's the public that voted me in from the wildcard, they're loyal fans and I'm just so grateful to them, you know.'
