Simon Cowell has begged his Twitter followers to pick an X Factor winner who will be a 'star', amid speculation that producers fear a victory for Christopher Maloney would damage the show's credibility.
The mogul made his plea ahead of Saturday night's quarter-final, which saw the five remaining acts take to the stage to sing songs from Abba and Motown.
And although he did not specifically mention Maloney, he told his five million followers: 'To everyone voting in the uk tonight. Please vote for who you believe could be a star next year. It's in your hands.'
'I think the final is going to be very interesting this year! I have my own favourite,' he added - later admitting that it was James Arthur after being asked.
However the possibility of a Maloney victory - which could still happen after he made it through to the semi-final on Sunday night's show - would be Cowell's 'worst nightmare', according to insiders.
'If Maloney wins, it will ruin any credibility the show still has,' the source told The Sun.
'There is fear of a campaign by some viewers to make Chris the winner in order to give the show a good kicking. But it's up to the public vote, which is worrying everyone.'
And despite proving unpopular with the judges Maloney has reportedly topped the public vote on several occasions, and also received some support from his fellow performers, most notably last night's eliminated act Rylan Clark.
Speaking on The Xtra Factor after making his exit from the show, Rylan said: 'I think Chris has got a real chance. He's got a lot of support.'
The Liverpudlian singer will compete in next weekend's semi-final alongside Union J, Jahmene Douglas and James Arthur.
