Katie Holmes put on a brave face as she stepped out for the first time since the news of her divorce from Tom Cruise emerged.
The 33-year-old actress left her New York apartment yesterday morning just days after she filed for divorce from her husband of five years.
But while the news sees the end of their five year marriage, Katie managed to raise a small smile as she made her way through hordes of press and camera crews who had camped outside her Chelsea apartment.
Flanked by her new security team, Katie was clearly in safe hands and didn't stop to talk to anybody.
Wearing a smart black and navy collared dress with her hair scraped back into a neat ponytail, the Dawson's Creek star made her way through the crowds with her head down.
Despite her sophisticated demeanour, what was probably most noticeable about the actress' outfit choice was the five-carat engagement diamond and wedding band missing from her left finger.
And Katie showed there's no way back to working out their marriage as she held her hand up for the cameras to see.
Katie was taking a leaf out of Tom's book, who is throwing himself into work as he films Oblivion in Iceland at the moment, as she was heading to film an episode of Project Runway: All Stars in New York, filmed at Parsons The New School of Design.
Show judge Isaac Mizrahi spoke to People after the recording was complete, telling press Katie did 'great'.
The episode is due to air later this year.
Today it also emerges that Katie, who fled for divorce from Tom in New York City last week, claimed their marriage was 'irretrievably broken' for some time.
But TMZ are reporting that she blindsided Tom, who had no idea she was going to apply to end their marriage.
Since the showbiz couple's relationship came to a crashing end, camera crews and press have been camped outside Katie's apartment in Chelsea hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.
But while press attention may be understandable, given the couple's Hollywood status, according to fresh reports the police have been called after neighbours raised concerns she was being followed by armed men.
The New York Post report that the men were seen sitting inside a white Cadillac Escalade outside her apartment building taking pictures.
Some rumours suggest they are members of the Scientology church, of which Tom is a member, but this was met with firm denial from the church's lawyer.
Gary Soter told TMZ: 'The Church of Scientology is not following Katie or conducting surveillance on her in the wake of her divorce with Tom Cruise.'
It has also emerged Holmes jumped ship over fears Tom was planning on sending their six-year-old daughter Suri to 'hardcore Scientology' boot camp, the Sea Organization, based on the ship Freewinds.
According to TMZ, kids as young as five are sent to the 'boot camp' without their parents 'to be taught the 'highest levels of Scientology'.
The chilling prospect was alleged to be the 'flashpoint' for Holmes as she decided to end the couple's five-and-a-half-year marriage.
As for Cruise, he is said to be chilled to the bone by Holmes's exit as he prepares for 'muted' birthday celebrations in Iceland today.
'He had no idea this was coming,' said a friend. 'He's totally devastated and heartbroken.'
Katie's lawyer father Martin will be taking over legal proceedings for the star.
She filed for divorce in NYC in the hope she would be granted sole custody of Suri and has claimed the family live in the city, despite their family home being in California.
Tom wants proceedings moved to California, as courts are more likely to grant joint custody of a child instead.
