Their determination to keep the details of the ceremony under wraps was so great that the invitations to family and friends did not even include a location, meaning guests had to wait until the last minute to discover where in southern Italy they needed to go.
Justin, 31, and Biel, 30, have now revealed they are man and wife.
In a statement to People magazine, they said: 'It's great to be married, the ceremony was beautiful and it was so special to be surrounded by our family and friends.'
Details about the ceremony and reception are sketchy, as the couple have signed an exclusive magazine deal for coverage of the event, but it is believed the guests included talk show host Jimmy Fallon, music producer Timbaland, actress Beverley Mitchell and Justin's former N Sync bandmate Chris Fitzpatrick.
The couple have been dating for five years and he proposed in Big Sky Montana in December last year, presenting her with a custom-designed ring.
