Chris took to the stage for the Halloween edition of the programme and belted out Cutting Crew's hit (I Just) Died In Your Arms flanked by a ghostly ship.
After he finished his number that he hoped would see him through to the live shows next week, it was clear that he didn't impress the judges.
Nicole kicked things off by gushing that she wanted to give Maloney a hug because of his nerves, and praised his dance moves without actually giving him any constructive criticism.
The drama began when Tulisa decided not to slate Chris but his mentor Barlow, telling the Take That star: 'How many more 80s songs are you going to let him destroy?'
A bewildered and angry Gary retorted: 'I'm not sure what surprises me more - your comments or your fag-ash breath'.
As a deathly silence fell over the audience, Tulisa snapped back: 'You'd better lay off that red wine Gary. I can smell it from here.'
Host Dermot O'Leary stepped in and attempted to defend Maloney, who entered the competition as Gary's wildcard act, but it did nothing to dispel the atmosphere between Gary and the N-Dubz frontwoman.
Meanwhile James Arthur gave a barnstorming performance of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics, leading judge Barlow to say: 'That was the performance of someone who wants to win this competition'.
Judge Louis Walsh said: 'That recording contract can't be too far away.'
Jahmene also impressed with a performance of Killing Me Softly, which came after a live show that saw him burst into tears when he had finished singing.
Rylan Clark continued to polarise viewers with a medley of Britney Spears' Toxic, Mousse T's Horny and mentor Nicole Scherzinger's hit Poison.
Gary's comments raised boos from the studio audience as he praised everything but Rylan's voice, including the staging and the dancers.
