As bizarre showbiz alliances go, Lady Gaga's new BFF Julian Assange literally takes the cake.

The pop juggernaut turned all political during her visit to London after it emerged she swung by the Ecuadorian Embassy to enjoy tea with the holed up Wikileaks founder following her perfume launch at Harrods on Sunday.

The link between the pair became further tenuous after it emerged controversial British rapper M.I.A masterminded the cuppa.

The 37-year-old Paper Planes hitmaker tweeted: '@ladygaga if ur at harrods today , come visit Assange at the Ecuador embassy across the st. im there. ill bring TEA and CAKE.'

A day later and Gaga posted up pictures of her in a big black hat hanging out with Assange at the embassy, where he looked like he spilt some tea on his white T-shirt.

The Australian has sort asylum at the embassy as he fights extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning over allegations of rape and sexual assault.

The 41-year-old has been told by our government he will be arrested if he steps outside.

In the past, Gaga's music has served as the perfect decoy for obtaining highly sensitive information for Assange's whistle-blowing website.

US marine Bradley Manning, who was arrested two years ago on suspicion of passing sensitive information to the website, told how he used Gaga's CD to smuggle his info out of buildings.

In an interview, Manning, 24, revealed: '[I] listened and lip-synched to Lady Gaga's Telephone while exfiltrating possibly the largest data spillage in American history.

'No one suspected a thing.'

It's not the first time Gaga, 26, has revealed her political tendencies after she dressed up as a US politician to deliver a rally cry against the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, which prevented openly-gay people serving in the US military.
