Tulisa had been aided by guest mentor Tinie Tempah in St Lucia as she whittled down her final six acts, with only three going through to the live shows.
After opting to put through Ella Henderson and Jade Ellis through at the expense of Jade Collins and Leanne Robinson, it was left to Lucy Spraggan and Amy to battle it out for the final coveted spot in the live shows.
But while the final decision of the judges' houses stage is always wracked with tension, this time the pressure became too much for Tulisa. Becoming tearful as she prepared to deliver her verdict, Tulisa admitted she 'hates this bit'.
She eventually opted to take through Lucy, telling a downcast Amy: 'I'm sorry but I'm not taking you through. And if there were four spaces in this competition you'd be the first person to jump in there.'
After Amy left in tears Tulisa broke down herself, admitting to producers that she feared she may have made the wrong decision.
But Amy now has a second shot at making the live finals after she was handed one of the four wild cards alongside Adam Burridge, Times Red and Christopher Maloney.
Viewers will vote for their favourite to be reinstated, with the winner joining the final 12 to perform on Saturday's live show as a fully-fledged finalist.
