When it was first announced that Rihanna would be performing on The X Factor results show tonight, cynics suggested we might be in for another raunchy performance from the scantily clad singer.

But the Barbadian star confounded the X Factor audience by appearing on stage to sing new single Diamonds wearing a relatively demure ensemble.

However, never one to shy away from adding a little something to spice up her performances, RiRi became progressively wetter in the studio as she found herself singing in the rain.

Buckets of water rained down on the star while she sang live for the X Factor judges, leaving many fans watching at home making all-too-easy jokes about her needing an umbrella because of her 2007 hit song.

One tweeted: 'Ironically, Rihanna could've done with an umbrella...' while another followed suit, adding: 'Bet she wishes she brought an umbrella-ella-ella #rihanna #xfactor'.

Tonight's results show also saw Bruno Mars perform live in the studio, while contestant Rylan Clark got the boot from the competition.

The flamboyant Essex native was magnanimous in defeat, telling Dermot: 'I've had seven bonus weeks on this competition. This show is one of the absolute pleasures to be a part of. It's been good.'
