Rylan Clark has admitted being booted off The X Factor feels like he's been released from prison - as his faux nemesis Gary Barlow revealed plans for the pair to team up in the near future.

Essex-born Rylan became the ninth act voted off the ITV show last night as he lost out in the quarter-final sing-off against Union J.

But rather than be deflated about his exit, the 24-year-old flamboyant performer admitted he finally feels free as he said a weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

Speaking after his exit on The Xtra Factor, he said: 'I feel like a weight has just lifted off my shoulders; I feel like I've been let out of prison to be fair. Not in a bad way, I've loved it here.'

And despite their week-on-week disputes, Rylan also admitted he's going to miss judge Gary Barlow.

'I'm going to miss Gary with all my heart, he's like the uncle you never wanted but you just love,' he said.

As Rylan insisted he will definitely keep in touch with Nicole, he went on to admit he has a lot to thank Gary for.

He explained: 'I've got a lot to thank Gary for what he's done for me because we just laid out the truth on the table tonight and we do get on really, really well.

'What happens in the studio stays there and he's such a good guy. It's been an absolute pleasure for him to even see me sing let alone anything else.'

And it would appear Gary is just as fond of Rylan.

Every week the Take That frontman pulls apart Rylan's performances, declaring while the controversial act is still in the competition, someone good will go.

And last night, speaking about his exit, Gary praised Rylan for his entertainment as he suggested the pair could team up at a later date.

He said: 'It is a shame to see Rylan go but we're at the sharp end of the talent now and I thought it was his week to go. He's been brilliant he really has been great fun.

'We're a bit of a double act me and Rylan aren't we? Maybe that is the future right there. It's always good to have a fall-back.'

Although Rylan managed to finish in fifth place in the competition, losing out to Union J, Jahmene Douglas, James Arthur and Christopher Maloney, he admitted he knew he was a goner as soon as he saw who he was up against in the sing-off.

'The second I knew I was in the bottom two with Union J, I was like, "take care, all the best". But I totally knew and I'm totally fine with it.

'Like I said on the show I've had seven bonus weeks as far as I'm concerned and what a great time to go out, quarter finals, I never thought I'd get that far. I came fifth which is on one hand!'

Rylan also took the opportunity to heap praise on his mentor, US judge Nicole: 'Oh Nic, what can I say? If it weren't for her I don't know what I'd be doing now, this woman has changed my life.'

And she returned the favour, saying: 'Oh my gosh, I'm so proud of him. I mean we had a right old laugh, we had good run. We made magical moments for this show.

'I think people will always remember Rylan. I'll miss the fun and I won't be able to use words like "schmazeballs" anymore as he was the "schmazeballs" of the show.

'People at home don't see him backstage he really is the glue to our family. He's so special and he just went out with such class tonight.'
