The 60-year-old battled colon cancer 10-years ago but decided to take this precaution to lessen her chances of further cancer scares.

Speaking to Hello! Magazine, she said: 'As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: "The odds are not in my favour".

'I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud: I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy.'

She underwent a 13-hour operation but says she can't feel sorry for herself and wants to focus on being a grandmother.

Sharon became a grandparent for the first time this year to Pearl, the daughter of her son Jack and his wife Lisa Stelly.

'For me, it wasn't a big decision, it was a no-brainer. I didn't want to live the rest of my life with that shadow hanging over me. I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to Pearl,' continued. 'I didn't even think of my breasts in a nostalgic way, I just wanted to be able to live my life without that fear all the time.'

Sharon then added: 'The surgery was 13 hours in total – the recovery was definitely not pleasant. They reconstructed my breasts at the same time: they're very small now. I'm happy with them but I wasn't that concerned with how they would look – I wanted to be cancer-free.'

The surgery has also made Sharon swear off any more cosmetic surgery.

'You can't buy your youth back, no matter how much money you've got,' Sharon added. 'I won't be going under the knife again.'

The former X Factor judge has had a tough year as in addition to her double mastectomy, she's had to deal with her son Jack being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of just 26.
