Ella Henderson has been voted off The X Factor after a dramatic sing-off with fellow favourite James Arthur.

Ella, who has consistently been one of the favourites to win the entire competition, was sent home after the X Factor judges failed to reach a verdict and the decision was left to the public vote.

There were boos from the audience when Ella and James found themselves in the bottom two, with many X Factor fans left questioning why apparently less talented acts like Christopher Maloney and Rylan Clark had been saved.

Forced into a sing-off, Ella performed Daniel Bedingfield's You're Not The One, while James opted to sing Fallin' by Alicia Keys, who also performed on tonight's results show.

James's mentor Nicole Scherzinger said the pair were among the 'most talented people ever to grace this stage' while Gary Barlow said there was not 'anything between them'.

After it was revealed that Ella had received the fewest votes, her mentor Tulisa Contostavlos was livid, telling host Dermot O'Leary: 'People thought she was safe and they didn't pick up the phone and vote.'

Ella was magnanimous in defeat, saying: 'Everybody deserves to be in the final. I want to say thank you. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for this show.

'I've grown as a person and I'm going to take that with me.'

The 16-year-old had odds of just 33/1 to leave the competition at this stage and Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Donohue called it one of 'the biggest TV betting upsets of all time.'

He added: 'Jahmene was the big winner and he's now in pole position for X Factor glory.

'The purists will be leading a campaign to bring back Ella. Sadly for her the odds suggest the show is more likely to be cancelled.'
