Gary Barlow walks off X Factor set after Louis Walsh's vote saves Rylan

The X Factor's first results show ended in drama on Sunday night after Louis Walsh's decision to send the vote to deadlock sent Carolynne Poole home - and saved Rylan Clark.

Both Rylan and Carolynne faced the chop after finding themselves in the first sing-off of the series - with Rylan performing the Dreamgirls hit One Night Only and Carolynne singing Faith Hill's There You'll Be in their bid to stay in the competition.

But after the judges' decisions left Walsh with the casting vote - with Carolynne leading Rylan by two to one - he appeared unable to make a decision and agonised over it for several minutes, despite being urged by Dermot O'Leary to make his vote.

At one point he even appeared to say he would save Carolynne and send Rylan home - but ultimately as Gary begged him to vote for his act, he instead sent the vote to deadlock, meaning the public vote would decide who went home.

And when Dermot revealed the results, Carolynne was found to have polled the lowest number of public votes - controversially sending her home instead of Rylan.

The result proved too much for Gary, who stormed off set as Rylan wept and the shock sunk in for Carolynne, as the audience - who had previously been chanting Rylan's name in a bid to influence Walsh's vote - booed the decision.

Afterwards Barlow hit out at Walsh, saying, 'It's a joke, an absolute joke. I am so gutted. Two years now and you've lost out to joke acts

'I don't get that. I said to him, why send it to deadlock, it's ridiculous. There is no deadlock there at all.'

Carolynne, meanwhile, admitted on The Xtra Factor that she was 'gutted' to be leaving the competition, and when asked if she expected to be saved by Louis Walsh said, 'No, he never saves me.'
