I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here bosses have been accused of failing in their duty of care for contestants after Brian Conley quit the jungle show over a 'mystery illness'.

The comedian bowed out of the show on Monday with viewers being told he had been taken ill and given no further detail.

But as mystery surrounded his sudden departure yesterday, it has led to ITV bosses being accused of not making sure contestants are properly fit before entering the jungle.

The 51-year-old comedian lasted ten days in the jungle before he was taken to hospital in Queensland, Australia for medical reasons.

It came as a shock to viewers who saw Brian on Saturday's show looking fit and healthy.

Brian's wife Anne-Marie, who arrived in Australia yesterday with the couple's two children, is now apparently demanding to know why he wasn't removed from the jungle sooner.

A show source told The Sun: 'She couldn't believe how much he'd changed after ten days in the jungle. He looks really unwell and vulnerable.

'He's lost a lot of weight and is exhausted. Doctors have prescribed lots of rest until he recovers. Anne-Marie was hugely supportive of Brian's decision to go on the show, but now you can't blame her wishing he hadn't.

'She wants to know how this happened and why bosses did not intervene earlier.'

But ITV has moved to defend itself over the situation, insisting the celebrities' welfare is of utmost importance to them and they have medical assistance on-hand 24 hours a day in case it is needed.

An ITV spokesman said: 'The safety and welfare of our contestants is of paramount importance.

'All contestants are assessed by independent medical experts.

'We also have contact where necessary with the celebrities' GPs.

'Medical personnel are also available 24 hours a day to provide support if it is needed.'

Brian has now been released from hospital and is thought to be recovering with his family.

Prior to his departure, the funnyman was one of the firm favourites to win the reality show.

His premature departure has caused confusion with viewers who saw him dancing around for a variety performance with former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts on Saturday's show.

His exit also follows a bout of apparent weight loss after a week of living on rice and beans.

Concerns over how Brian was coping in the jungle were raised when he broke down in tears following a confrontation with David Haye involving a log.

He then proceeded to annoy fellow campmates when he told new arrival Rosemary Shrager some of them thought she was rude when she told Haye she wasn't a fan of boxing.
