X Factor contestant James Arthur made his bid to avoid a second sing-off with a performance of a Motown classic which left the female judges almost speechless.

The 23-year-old showed off his smooth side as he performed Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On in the second half of Saturday's show, which saw the remaining five acts singing a double bill of Abba and Motown songs.

And after a performance which saw him ditching his guitar in favour of walking through the audience, singing personally to Tulisa and holding Nicole Scherzinger's hand, the ladies could barely contain themselves.

'I think it's fair to say that a lot of babies might be conceived tonight in your name,' Nicole told him.

'You have so much soul, you murdered it - you are like hot butter that melts in our mouths.

Tulisa added: 'Only you could get away with singing that song. It was sexy, it was cheeky.'

James also made an impact in the first half of the show when he delivered a stripped-down acoustic rendition of Abba's SOS - leading Louis Walsh to point out that the competition would be a poorer place without him.

'It would have been a travesty if you were not here, we need original acts like you,' he said. 'I never thought that angst and Abba would work so well.'

Gary Barlow added, 'It must be really tempting to be safe and conform and you have done none of that tonight.

'You have played this competition the way you want to play it and I really respect you, another incredible performance.'

James narrowly escaped elimination last weekend after finding himself in the bottom two with Ella Henderson - but survived after the judges were unable to decide between them and the result went to deadlock.
