Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rihanna were just some of the many celebrities who took to Twitter to congratulate US President Barack Obama after he was successfully re-elected for a second term.

I Kissed A Girl singer Perry, who was recently pictured with Obama and her 91-year-old grandmother Ann Hudson, told her followers how 'proud' she was.

She said: 'The people have the power! Proud to stand by you for 4 more years. RT @BarackObama This happened because of you. Thank you.'

Her best pal Rihanna was also in the mood to celebrate tweeting: 'Put one in da air for the Prez!!!! Our dear Obama!'

Lady Gaga, who was playing a gig in Columbia, was ecstatic to learn about the results.

She posted: 'I JUST GOT OFF STAGE IN COLUMBIA!! CONGRATULATIONS MR. PRESIDENT @BarackObama!.

'We are so proud to be American tonight! YES!!! YES! YES!! We just couldn't be happier my goodness, the joy when freedom prevails.'

Comedian Ricky Gervais congratulated the States saying: 'Well Done America. We knew you'd get it right. #ObamaWins'

Rapper P Diddy told his fans: 'It feels even better the secoond time around!!!!'

The Voice judge Will.i.am said: 'All that travel, hard work and campaigning was worth it...and now its time to work even harder...'

Lea Michele revealed she was partying at Glee creator Ryan Murphy's house.

She wrote: 'Amazing election party tonight at@MrRPMurphy's house! And so glad we got to celebrate the re-election of OBAMA!!!#GObama'

Nicole Richie gushed: 'We did it America!!!!! #OBAMA'

Tron star Olivia Wilde raved: 'AMERICA! You have spoken! Women! You have been heard! Young people! You proved them wrong! Tireless Obama volunteers! I THANK YOU!'

While MC Hammer posted: 'America is making a huge statement !!! Humanity is primary.The people need access to medical care and we Appreciate and Respect Women !!!'

Avatar actress Zoe Saldana said: 'We all spoke and our voices were heard. See?! We do have the power to make a change! We voted and as americans we elected our president!'

Meanwhile, Simon Pegg made a quip at defeated candidate Mitt Romney's expense.

He tweeted: 'Today's Sesame Street is brought to you by the number 2 and the phrase 'f*** you'.'

Obama famously made a campaign advert using Sesame Street's beloved character Big Bird to make a dig at Romney but was later asked to pull the clip by the show's makers.
